Tonight on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the stage was filled with entertainment and laughter. Host Stephen Colbert kicked off the show by talking about Thanksgiving and asked if anyone in the audience cooked. Louis, the show band member, humorously admitted that he doesn’t cook, he orders Uber Eats, just like the Pilgrims did. Stephen then joked about bringing sides and mentioned how technically they could also be considered as mains.
After the comedic Thanksgiving banter, Stephen moved on to the exciting lineup for the night. He introduced two extraordinary performers who would be gracing the stage – Peter Dinklage from The Hunger Games ballad of songbirds and snakes and the talented comedian and podcaster, Tig Notaro. Stephen expressed his admiration for Tig, emphasizing that he is a big fan.
But before diving into the guests, Stephen gave a glimpse into his role on the show. He shared his process of sourcing the finest and most topical news stories of the day and crafting them into his nightly “segment.” Using colorful language, Stephen described how sometimes his sourcing process becomes adventurous and involves being disgorged from a ketamine trafficker camper van in the Bronx River Forest, stealing a tent, and drifting down the river onboard a smuggler canoe of news.
Cutting to “Meanwhile…” segment, Stephen shared some intriguing and funny stories from around the world. In Scotland, a church bell that had chimed every hour for the past 200 years was silenced because one resident complained about their sleep being disturbed. Stephen couldn’t help but poke fun at the simplicity of the complaint, hilariously saying, “I know, right? Bell!”
Transitioning from sleep disturbances to skincare, Stephen mentioned that Dior had recently released a skincare line for babies. The line includes a scented water priced at $230 and a moisturizer priced at $115. With a touch of humor, Stephen joked that these products guarantee to keep the baby smooth and possibly make their first word be “why?” – a callback to the expensive skincare routine.
As the holiday season approaches, Stephen shared a captivating job opening. He revealed that a big city Corporation was offering $2,000 to a Christmas movie Maven to watch and rank 12 Hallmark holiday movies. Stephen’s excitement was palpable as he imagined a small-town movie lover helping save Christmas in a non-Hallmark movie. He even humorously mentioned Melissa Joan Hart, a popular Hallmark movie actress, as potentially taking up the challenge.
Moving on to a sports-related topic, Stephen revealed an interesting quirk about Kansas City football man Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes admitted to wearing the same pair of underwear on game days for years. Stephen, in solidarity, jokingly declared that he also wears the same pair of Patrick Mahomes underwear during each show. He thanked Patrick for standing up for enduring comfort. Mahomes did clarify that the underwear does get washed occasionally, saying, “If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them, you know, like I gotta just keep it rolling.” Stephen, always ready with a witty response, advised Mahomes to wash them when he notices a hot streak – a playful reminder of hygiene.
Wrapping up the “Meanwhile…” segment, Stephen mentioned that the American ornithological society announced a change in offensive bird names. Some of these names, including the gray-breasted Yama so fat and the split tail drunken Irishmen, will be modified. Stephen didn’t miss the opportunity for a joke, playfully adding, “Beautiful plumage, beautiful plumage.”
To end on a sweet note, Stephen shared exciting news from Baskin Robbins. They revealed two Thanksgiving-themed desserts – a turkey-shaped cake filled with any ice cream flavor and coated with a caramel praline glaze. Stephen couldn’t help but express his enthusiasm, exclaiming, “Look at that, look at that!” as he revealed a picture of the dessert.
With the promise to be right back, Stephen wrapped up the segment, leaving the audience eagerly waiting for the guests to take the stage.
