The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had a spooktacular Halloween episode this year. Host Stephen Colbert kicked off the show by wishing everyone a happy Halloween and mentioning that parts of the East Coast experienced the warmest Halloween in 50 years. Colbert humorously shared that he would be dressed as a “sexy concerned climate scientist” for Halloween.
The White House also celebrated Halloween with their own trick-or-treating event. The theme this year was “hello Reed,” which Colbert playfully commented on, saying that if people thought that theme was nerdy, they should wait until December for “Merry Christmas.” The event started with the Biden family’s costume reveal. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were dressed as pandas, which Colbert found adorable. He joked that seeing Jill in that panda costume probably gave former President Trump an idea. Colbert then hilariously quipped that Melania standing next to Trump was definitely not JD Vance dressed up as a gopher.
The Late Show host couldn’t help but make light of Trump’s Halloween costume choice. While initially unsure, Colbert discovered that Trump was dressed as a garbage man, not a traffic cone that’s also a sex doll. Colbert joked about the big story of the week being the fallout from Trump’s disastrous Madison Square Garden rally, where one of the speakers referred to Puerto Rico as a floating island of garbage. Biden responded to this comment, saying that the only garbage he saw floating out there was Trump’s supporters, calling it “uncontrollable” and “unamerican.”
Colbert then moved on to Trump’s Halloween rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he dressed as a garbage man. Colbert cheekily mentioned that Trump seemed to have difficulty projecting strength when trying to get into a garbage truck. It appeared that Trump was taking walking lessons from Rudy Giuliani, as his movements were compared to dancing to two different songs. Once Trump managed to get into the truck, he attempted to answer some questions from the press, but it was challenging to hear him.
The Late Show host transitioned to Trump’s comments about wanting to be the protector of women, which received blowback. Trump defiantly stated that he would protect women, whether they liked it or not. Colbert humorously suggested that it sounded sweeter in Trump’s wedding vows. He also highlighted Trump’s denial of being called a Nazi or Hitler, expressing that he wanted to be Hitler but settled for being a garbage man this year. Colbert couldn’t resist taking a jab at Trump’s transition from German dictator to garbage man.
The episode also touched on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris‘s campaign efforts. Colbert mentioned Harris’s rally in Madison, Wisconsin, where she encouraged young people to help get out the vote. He humorously suggested that voters should knock on doors, text, call, and even lasso voters with a long rope to ensure they go to the polls. Colbert also noted that almost 60 million people had already voted, with women outnumbering men by a 10-point margin. Suburban women showed a 19-point preference for Harris, on par with their enthusiasm for cocktail napkins that say “wine.”
Colbert highlighted a campaign ad narrated by Julia Roberts, emphasizing that in the one place where women still have a right to choose, they can vote any way they want with no one ever knowing. The ad featured two women in a voting booth, suggesting a possible romantic connection between them. Colbert couldn’t help but wonder if they had a moment in the booth.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert concluded with a mention of the upcoming guests, including Seth Myers and comedian Mohamed El Shi. It was another entertaining and lively episode filled with Halloween fun, political jokes, and campaign updates.
