In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Don Johnson, known for his iconic role in Miami Vice, sat down with Jimmy to discuss his new show, Dr Odyssey, and share some amusing stories.
Don Johnson, who plays the captain on the ship in Dr Odyssey, was recognized by Jimmy Kimmel as a “cool” and “good-looking” man. Don admitted that he would gladly accept a date invitation if Jimmy was asking, jokingly referring to John Stamos joining them as well.
The conversation then turned to a surprising revelation – Don’s supposed golfing friendship with Denzel Washington. Don downplayed the claim, stating that they are friendly but denied ever playing golf with Denzel. Nonetheless, he praised Denzel’s talent, calling him amazing.
Don was then asked about the infamous audition process for Miami Vice, where he played Detective James “Sonny” Crockett. In response to Jimmy’s question about Denzel auditioning for the role of Tubs, Don hesitated but ultimately agreed that it may have happened. He also mentioned auditioning with Andy Garcia in Miami, which sparked some nostalgia about their time together.
However, the most entertaining anecdotes came when Don shared his experiences with his daughter, Dakota Johnson. According to Don, Dakota was mischievous during her childhood. She would prank him by sending obscene messages from his phone to random people and drawing inappropriate images on blank sheets of paper.
Moving on, Don revealed that he used to live next door to the notorious writer Hunter S. Thompson, who was his best friend for 25 years. He described Hunter as an amazing fellow who would even sleep in the stall with sick animals. Their friendship was filled with pranks, much like Dakota’s, and Don recounted a story involving Johnny Depp and a classic scare tactic.
Don also touched on his role as the captain on Dr Odyssey, a show set on a ship. He expressed his enjoyment of playing a captain and joked about the power and authority that come with the role. However, Don clarified that the show is not actually filmed on a real ship but rather on a Paramount studio set designed to look like one.
The conversation took a lighthearted turn when Don jokingly asked to shift the conversation back to penises, referencing a storyline in the pilot episode of Dr Odyssey involving a broken penis and a subsequent operation. He teased that viewers may even be able to look forward to more penis-related incidents in future episodes of the show.
As the interview wrapped up, Jimmy inquired about Don’s process for selecting projects. Don emphasized that it’s more about the people involved rather than the material itself. He explained that he considers the character, the team, and whether he feels he can contribute and be of value to the project before making a decision.
With his natural charisma and entertaining stories, Don Johnson captivated the audience during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Fans can catch him in his role as the ship captain on Dr Odyssey, airing on ABC on Thursday nights at 9 pm and available to stream on Hulu the next day.
