On a recent episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries made a lively appearance to discuss the current state of American politics. Jeffries, who was just reelected as the Democratic leader of the House of Representatives, emphasized the importance of maintaining joy and optimism despite the challenging times.

When asked about the ethics report on Matt Gaetz, Jeffries revealed that while the report has been disseminated to other members of Congress, he is not part of the Ethics Committee. Though he declined to provide specifics, he humorously assured viewers that Gaetz would not be the next Attorney General of the United States.

The conversation then turned to Marjorie Taylor Greene, who suggested releasing all ethics reports on Republicans and Democrats alike. Jeffries agreed that transparency is crucial in a democracy, stating, “the American people deserve to know what their elected representatives are up to.” However, he dismissed Taylor Greene’s comments, noting that he does not take anything she says seriously.

Colbert raised the question of what could happen to Gaetz now that he has resigned his seat but a new special election has not been called. Jeffries confirmed that Gaetz could potentially return, only to face further scrutiny if the ethics report is released. He humorously likened the situation to an “existential Jack in the Box.”

As the conversation shifted towards the Democratic party’s message, Jeffries explained that Democrats wake up every day with the goal of making life better for the American people. He stressed the importance of providing a comfortable living, access to high-quality healthcare, and opportunities for all Americans. Jeffries emphasized that Democrats will fight to bring the promise of the American dream back to life.

Colbert pressed further, asking Jeffries to define the Democratic message in contrast to the Republicans. Jeffries highlighted key Democratic positions, including protecting and strengthening Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act. He also emphasized a belief in a woman’s freedom to make her own reproductive healthcare decisions.

Towards the end of the interview, attention shifted to Jeffries’ new children’s book, “The ABCs of Democracy.” The book aims to educate younger Americans about the values and principles that make America the greatest democracy in the world. Jeffries expressed hope that this book, which reminds readers of the enduring values that sustain the nation, will inspire future generations.
