On a recent episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, comedian Romesh Ranganathan had audiences in stitches with his hilarious anecdotes and witty banter. The talk show host welcomed Ranganathan with thunderous applause, acknowledging his frequent appearances on the show.
During the interview, the topic of diversity in the entertainment industry came up, particularly in reference to the Oscars. Ranganathan shared his thoughts, stating that Will Smith‘s lack of nomination wasn’t due to his race but rather the quality of his film. He humorously added that the Oscars couldn’t possibly award an Oscar to a movie with a mechanical spider like “Wild Wild West”.
Ranganathan also discussed his recent trip to Sri Lanka, a journey he embarked on to reconnect with his Sri Lankan heritage. His mother encouraged him to explore his roots, as he knew very little about his cultural background. Despite being of English descent, Ranganathan embraced his Sri Lankan identity throughout the trip, though he humorously referred to himself as an “Englishman in an amazing Sri Lankan disguise”.
The comedian shared his experience of meeting distant relatives in Sri Lanka, admitting that the language barrier posed some challenges. Many of his relatives had never left their villages and couldn’t speak English, while Ranganathan himself struggled with Tamil, his mother tongue. He recounted an amusing encounter with one of his uncles who silently wiped him down and introduced him to his wife, a slightly portly woman. Ranganathan jokingly stated that his uncle matter-of-factly described his wife as “fat and ugly”, leaving the audience in fits of laughter.
Talk soon shifted to Ranganathan’s three sons, whom he often references in his comedy routines. Although he admitted to talking about his four-year-old the most, he clarified that it was the opposite in reality. Ranganathan brought his distinctive humor to the discussion, playfully confessing that while he loved his children, he found his oldest son particularly challenging. He described his oldest son as lacking a survival instinct and being inattentive, admitting that he sometimes resented purchasing him birthday gifts.
Aside from his comedic endeavors, Ranganathan also discussed his involvement in a television show called “It’s Not Rocket Science”, which aimed to bring science-related topics to a wider audience. He explained that the show was designed to appeal to everyone, with no prior science knowledge required. With a mischievous smile, Ranganathan recounted an experiment on the show where he was suspended above a tank of crocodiles using only a household vacuum cleaner. The segment aimed to demonstrate the vacuum cleaner’s power and its ability to lift objects much heavier than expected.
Throughout the interview, Ranganathan’s wit and humor shone brightly, keeping both the host and the audience entertained. His unique perspective on various topics coupled with his self-deprecating humor made for a lively and memorable episode of The Jonathan Ross Show.
Fans of Ranganathan can look forward to his upcoming tour, as he plans to bring his comedy to venues across the country. Though some shows are already sold out, there are still tickets available for his autumn performances. Prepare yourself for an evening of laughter and hilarious insights from one of the comedy industry’s rising stars.
