In fact, if you ask me, everything should be shorter. Imagine if a movie came in at just sixty-two minutes? Best picture, done. Who has ever said, “I wish it was a little bit longer”? According to a CNN instant poll, only 41% of viewers had a very positive reaction to Biden’s speech, which is the lowest in roughly 15 years. The other 59% were probably just relieved that he got through it.

But it wouldn’t be a Biden speech without a little blunder. At one point, he talked about the resolve of the Ukrainian people but appeared to say something else entirely. Classic Biden, say it wrong, say it strong. And then there was Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who seemed confused about whether he was supposed to stand or not. Note to self, always show up for rehearsal.

And let’s not forget about the weird moments. When Biden discussed war zones and something called burn pits, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a rather odd reaction. I’ve watched that clip seventeen times, and the only conclusion I can come to is that Pelosi really likes burn pits. Maybe she’s trying to start a fire?

But it wasn’t just the awkward moments that stole the show. Far-right Republican lawmakers, like Marjorie Taylor-Green, made faces and heckled Biden throughout the speech. They looked like the real housewives of Mar-a-Lago, screaming at the manager of Chili’s because happy hour ended three minutes ago. I can’t help but think that Mitch McConnell‘s signature resting “Mitch-face” was the result of conserving energy. It does make more sense when you realize he’s on standby mode.

Of course, no Biden speech would be complete without a dramatic flourish. He declared, “I’ve ordered more pills than anyone.” Anyone? The band had a rebuttal, and it was unclear who Biden was referring to in his final line, “Go get him!” Mike Pence was probably watching at home, wondering what he did wrong this time.

All in all, it was an awkward but entertaining night on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The State of the Union address may have been shorter, but it certainly didn’t lack memorable moments. From Biden’s blunders to Pelosi’s love of burn pits, there was never a dull moment. Now, let’s all go get him!
