Law revealed that in addition to wearing a weighted suit and voluminous clothes to accurately portray Henry’s larger stature, he also had to address the character’s notorious leg problems. Henry VIII had appalling venous ulcers in his legs, which made it difficult for him to walk. To replicate this, Law worked closely with the film’s team to create shoes that added weight to his legs, giving him an unusual gait that matched Henry’s physical challenges.
But Law didn’t stop there. Inspired by the director’s vision of creating an immersive set that captured the era’s discomfort, Law decided to add another layer of authenticity by using odors. In order to replicate the putrid smell that surrounded Henry, Law approached a perfumer friend who specialized in creating unique scents. Together, they developed odors that resembled pus, blood, and fecal matter, giving Law the authentic smell of a decaying monarch.
Law admitted that the experiment was a success. The odor-induced reactions from the cast and crew authentically mirrored how people might have reacted to Henry during his time. From poor Alicia, who had to come in close proximity to Law’s character, to the director, who gleefully sprayed the foul odors everywhere, everyone fully immersed themselves in the experience.
